Nature Park Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge

Picknick am Desenberg (F. Grawe)

The Nature Park Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge is famous for its landscape of low mountain ranges with rich flora and fauna. It covers an area of 2.711 km². You will experience typical beech groves on thickly wooded hillsides that are native to species like deer, eagle owls, black storks and even wildcats. The breeding and raising of the European bison at the forest information centre “Hammerhof” in the southern part of the Eggegebirge near Warburg is a special quality to the Nature Park.

In the heart of the Nature Park you can find Germany’s “healing garden” with its many spas and parks  which does not only invite you to enjoy the treatments of one of the numerous health resorts but is also attractive for hiking, cycling und climbing. Varied natural, cultural and historical sights are combined with our beautiful and healthy nature. The Teutoburg Forest is full of mineral springs, healing moors, and relaxing landscapes.

Walking, cycling and exploring nature are being rediscovered as healthy ways to exercise and enjoy leisure time. The Teutoburg Forest, the "green roof" of North Rhine-Westphalia, is perfect for sound leisure activities in an unspoilt natural setting. The region of the Nature Park invites to make extensive cycle tours and hikes, for example on one of the German top trails, “Hermannshöhen”. The traditional trail is one of Germany's most beautiful ridge walks.

The region is abundant in reminders of its 2,000 years of history and culture. Its most popular attractions are the Monument of Hermann the Cheruscan on Grotenburg hill near Detmold, the legendary natural monument “Externsteine” and the monasteries in Corvey and Dalheim.

Experience cultural highlights like the historic town of Höxter on the river Weser, the cathedral city of Paderborn with its palatinate of Charlemagne or the largest city of East-Westphalia, Bielefeld, with the town's landmark, the castle called “Sparrenburg”. The impressive vulcano Desenberg with an ancient ruin on its hilltop shows the geological variety of our Nature Park and offers a fantastic view of the surrounding area.

In the Nature Park Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge body and soul can recreate in a natural environment.
